Since February this year there has been a monthly community beach clean up on Msasani Beach hosted by Archipelago Tanzania – it have gained traction and recognition with local government, local communities, and even the district commissioner of Kinondoni, Paul Makonda has attended our events.
The long term plan for the beach is a landscaped, functioning beautiful public beach space in Dar. At the moment the selected architects are drawing up the plans to include an outdoor gym, kids playground, running track, and more. It’s an ambitious project that Archipelago hopes to have ready to launch next year February.
Early this year in May, ANZA got on board and are working along with other organisations, passionate individuals that are giving city residents the right to their cities translated “Haki kwa jiji lako” –
We want to relook public spaces, how do we enhance them to create beautiful spaces for Dar es Salaam residents, but what kind of economic activities can fall out because of the development and growth.
Inspired by this, on 12th September, we have a beach clean up called Anza! UpCycle Fiesta – the reuse of public space and objects in art, functional art, and fun. this project will also be in conjunction with the International Coastal Clean Up Day (19th September). We will be inviting local community, schools, an various creative and arts groups to join us in a day of cleaning, sports, art and fun on the beach.
